Where Did My SPAM Go?
Brainstorm
recently installed and activated
the front-end SPAM filtering
servers that we've talked
to you about in the last
couple of email advisories.
The new filtering system
is called Barraccuda Spam
Firewall and has already
made a huge difference in
reducing the amount of junk
mail getting through to
our customers. We've
been gradually routing our customers' email traffic through the
new system over the last two weeks, as of Friday morning,
Dec. 1st,
all Brainstorm hosted email
addresses have
been
filtered through Barraccuda.
Even
at our current, moderate
settings, Barraccuda is
identifying over 80% of
all incoming mail as SPAM
and placing it into quarantine.
Many
customers have already noticed
the sharp drop
in SPAM volume and contacted
us asking "where's
my spam?" or "why
is my spam filtered folder no longer catching junk mail?" The
answer is simply that because Barraccuda is a much more sophisticated,
dynamic and effective filtering technology than the previous
generation of filtering technology we previously used. We have
completely replaced the Spamassassin system which we were using
before. The old
controls (Spam Settings, Whitelist and Blacklist, spamfiltered
folder)
are now disabled, however they will be returning soon.
We
will again be giving you
the ability to manage your
own filtering settings,
just as we have done in the
past, enabling
you to trim
down the junk mail even further by managing your filtering
thresholds. You will again have the ability to create whitelists
and blacklists.
Most important, you will be able to review your quarantined
messages to make sure you haven't missed something important.
Within the
next few days you will be receiving an email from us with
login information for your
personal account(s) on Barraccuda
so you can begin managing
all of these features directly.
It
doesn't appear that the
ugly reality of SPAM is going
to go away anytime soon, in fact it will likely continue
to grow.
